Water, as one of the main elements, was often an object of worship in the ancient world. In different cultures, there were water deities, various rituals were held, sanctuaries and majestic temples were built. Throughout the history of mankind, many of them have accumulated, but one of the most famous was the Temple of Water in Tunisia.
It was erected at the foot of Mount Zagwan. This historical landmark dates back to the Roman period, so it was built by them. This is a rather specific temple, it would be more correct to call it a huge fountain or a reservoir for fresh water.
Since the climate of Tunisia is very hot, decisions were made in ancient times to supply water to those regions. The architectural solution that was made there is unique in the world - it is a large aqueduct (a ground channel through which water was transported over a certain distance) 132 kilometers long. Passing through valleys at some points, it reached twenty meters in height.
Only some sections of the aqueduct have survived to this day. Although it broke down several times throughout its existence, it was immediately repaired, since the lack of water was acutely felt by Tunisian residents.
The fountain itself contained twelve statues of beautiful nymphs, presumably corresponding to the number of months in the calendar used by the Romans. The complex itself contained a settling tank for filtering water from the aqueduct. The structure itself resembles the outline of the number eight.
The Temple of Water is one of the most visited places in Tunisia. This is not surprising, because it is located several dozen kilometers from the capital. In addition, there is a small settlement nearby where you can stay tourists.
Buses and taxis go here, so there won't be any problems with that. It's best to visit the water temple from late spring to early autumn, when the mountain is covered in greenery, and it's not for nothing that the locals call it Green.
