Hungary used to be considered a luxury destination. Subsequent political and economic changes meant that tourists were no longer particularly interested in the country, but now things are starting to change again. So maybe it’s time to spend a holiday there?
castle hill
Probably one of the most interesting areas of Budapest is the Castle Hill, which is on the UNESCO list. The main attraction of this place is the Royal Castle (Budavári Palota), also known as Buda Castle.
The hill is definitely different from the rest of the city, its character is defined by atmospheric medieval and baroque streets, restaurants and cafes. It is a very popular place with tourists, in the middle of the day you can encounter crowds at the main attractions.
Eger
It is said that of all the Hungarian cities, except Budapest, it is Eger that is most often visited by Europeans. The place is interesting for its wine and numerous monuments. In the history of Hungary, the city became famous for its heroic defense against the Turks in 1552. The bloody battles ended with the victory of the defenders, and Hungarian women took part in the clashes.
In the city, it is worth visiting the walls of the mighty fortress, the ruins of the cathedral and the old town with a baroque monastery and a classical basilica. Of course, it is worth going south to the so-called "Valley of the Good Lady" (Szépasszonyvölgy), a place where numerous wine cellars were carved into the rock. Today, most of them serve as restaurants.
Old Town Miskolc
At first glance, Miszkolc is not impressive. The small old town is lost in the industrial center, moreover, its surroundings are not oriented towards hosting tourists (there may be problems with finding accommodation). What other suburbs of this one of the largest Hungarian cities. The most famous of the central districts of Miskolc - Tapolca is known for its swimming pools. A real attraction is the Barlangfürdő or thermal pool, which functions in a cave! Its popularity and natural conditions have led to the fact that several classic places where you can use the baths have been created in this area. In addition, there are a huge number of sanatoriums and other recreational facilities here today.
Two other attractions in Miskolc are related to history. About 15 kilometers from the pools, in the Diosgur area, there are ruins of a large medieval castle. The fairly well-preserved site is a small panoramic pattern with scenes from Hungarian history. During the season, concerts or historical reconstructions are often held.
20 km southeast of the city center, in 1241, the Battle of Mohi Plain took place. The Tatars destroyed the Hungarian army with several tens of thousands of knights! Today there is a mound with crosses here.
You can get to Miskolc by train from Budapest-Keleti railway station. However, to get to the castle or swimming pools, you will need to use city buses. To get to the mound on the battlefield, take the train south, get off at Hejkeresztúr station, and then walk 4 km east.
Caves in Aggtelek
The UNESCO-listed caves are a real treat for lovers of speleology. There are several caves in the area, with the most famous one called Baradla. It is open to visitors from Hungary and Slovakia, and local guides offer several routes. The most popular is an hour or two-hour underground walk, but you can also go for a day or even several! However, note that such escapades must be booked in advance. The real attraction of the caves is the famous concert hall located underground. Imagination is also stimulated by the River Styx.
