From January 27 to 29, 2012, the International Snowmobile Festival OpenKarelia will be held for the eighth time in the Karelian city of Olonets. Last winter, 140 participants from all over the country competed in the festival. In December 2011, more than 150 applications have already been submitted, reports our own correspondent Travel.ru.

The goal of the festival is to develop snowmobile movement in Russia and to communicate with fans of this type of recreation, and for beginners it is also a great opportunity to gain experience. It is during the communication at the festival that many ideas for runs and trips are born, new snowmobile teams and clubs appear.

OpenKarelia attracts not only participants, but also numerous spectators. This year, a separate program has been prepared for them, which includes excursions with a visit to a Karelian ethnic village and an ancient monastery, an entertainment program and the Snow Fest Party, where the winners will be awarded and musicians will perform.

The Republic of Karelia was not chosen as the venue for the festival by chance. In addition to picturesque landscapes, Karelia offers a well-developed transport and tourist infrastructure, and its diverse winter recreation opportunities are well known to travelers.
