The city is located in the province of the same name. The tourism sector is very well developed, so Salta offers wide opportunities for travel. You can relax in the city at any time of the year, except for January and February, when it is rainy. The best months for tourists are the period from May to October.
The town is located between two mountain ranges in a beautiful valley. It has absorbed all of old Argentina with its charming churches and cathedrals, small houses with balconies and narrow streets. The aromas of citrus trees and welcoming residents will leave an indelible impression.
The city's infrastructure is developed at the highest level - the airport is located 10 kilometers from Salta and can be reached from any corner of the country.
History tells us that in the 16th century, there was a military settlement on this site. It was founded by the conquistador Salta de Lerma. The town was called that until its name was shortened to its current name. The first settlers in this valley were Indians.
Initially, the city was built as the main outpost for the capture of local lands inhabited by wild Indian tribes, but its advantageous geographical position led to rapid economic growth and the establishment of Salta as a developed center of trade. The Chilean city of Potosi, famous for its silver mines, was located nearby. All trade routes to it led through the Argentine town.
Today, Salta is an important transportation hub on the way to Chile and Bolivia. Light industry factories and wine-making enterprises operate here. The main part of the development of the entire city is the tourism sector.
As in most cities, the best place to see the main sights of Salta is from the main square, surrounded by beautiful buildings. For example, from the Cathedral, built in the Baroque style and popular for its altar made by Luis George. This is one of the oldest temples. The exquisite ornaments and bright colors of the building are simply amazing.
Another shrine that is a must-see is the Cathedral of St. Francis. On the outside it has an unusual high tower, and inside there are statues of the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ that heal all illnesses and stop cataclysms (according to locals). Every year a huge number of believers and pilgrims come to Salta to personally touch the saints with their hands. The building looks especially beautiful in the evening, when the lights are turned on.
The City Hall has stood near the square for more than five centuries, but this has not prevented it from preserving its original appearance. Tourists often visit it. Now it houses the Historical Museum.
One of the most attractive and striking tourist attractions is the train in the clouds. To feel the emotions that the ride gives, you need to ride the attraction yourself. The railway departs from the platform on Saturdays at seven o'clock in the morning. The ticket price bites, but it's worth it, because you will travel more than 400 kilometers through deep canyons and viaducts rising straight into the air. The train runs from March to November, since there is not much to ride here during the rainy season. The ticket price is 150 dollars.
Los Cardones National Park will surprise you with its giant cacti. Here, among 64 hectares, the local village of Iruya is lost. The houses are carved directly into the rocks, and the deserted valleys and beautiful views will be imprinted in your memory for a long time.
There are vineyards near Salta. They produce wines that can be tasted in any of the city's cellars.
