The unique atmosphere of Tenerife can be experienced by visiting the charming towns of Icod de los Vinos, La Orotava and La Laguna during your holiday. The latter has an old town included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
La Orotava is known in particular for its Casas de los Balcones, so-called balcony houses, from which the whole of Tenerife can be seen. La Orotava has a flourishing craftsmanship and the climate is complemented by apartment buildings, narrow streets and green gardens.
Icod de los Vinos is famous for its oldest and largest dracaena tree in the world. This dragon tree is several meters high and is about 600 years old. While nearby, you should visit the Cave of the Winds, which is one of the longest volcanic tunnels in the world.
The most important volcano in Tenerife is Pico del Teide. Architecture lovers should visit the town of Güimar, which is famous for its stone step pyramids. You can take part in an active trip to the Los Gigantes cliffs. On the exciting access road you can admire the village of Masca, destroyed by the Garachico volcano. The majestic landscape and the absence of tourist crowds attract with their authenticity.
Tenerife: weather, essential information
The island's climate is described as oceanic-subtropical. Good weather all year round. The average temperature is 23 degrees. The peak of the holiday season is in July, but more and more people book a cheap hotel here in winter. From time to time, each of the Canary Islands is subject to a sandstorm. This phenomenon consists of blowing fine sand through the Saharan air masses. Usually, the phenomenon lasts up to 3 days.
The island is best explored by car, which costs around €100 to rent for a week. The main tourist destinations are the resorts of Los Cristianos, Playa de la Americas, Costa Adeje in the southwest of the island and Puerto de la Cruz in the north. Hotels offer a high standard of all-inclusive.
In search of souvenirs, it is worth going to the marketplaces and browsing among the impressive collection of handicrafts, for example, when visiting the famous village of La Orotava.
Tenerife also has many festivals. On August 14, there is a ceremonial procession in honor of the patron saint of the islands. At Plaza Patrona de Canares, farmers from different parts of Tenerife gather together with colorful decorated carts in which they bring their produce to show tourists and locals a successful harvest. This is a celebration of Canarian folklore. Theatrical performances are performed in front of the main basilica on the square, and in the evening dancing begins.
