The Italian lakes have become synonymous with romantic holidays in some of the most beautiful geographical locations in the world. From Lake Garda and Lake Como, which have become famous for the rich and famous who holiday there, to more secluded bodies of water like Maggiore, the Italian lakes offer holidays to suit different tastes. From water sports and mountain trekking to relaxed lakeside strolls and café lunches, the Italian lakes offer both passive and active holidays. In the foothills of the Alps, the scenery is a mix of blue waters against a mountain backdrop.
Lake Garda
Lake Garda is located in the heart of northern Italy, almost equidistant from Milan, Venice, and Bologna. The body of water is also Italy’s largest lake. At 143 square kilometers, surrounded by islands, mountains, and gorgeous villages, Lake Garda is a feast for the eyes. With a mild climate, the lake area is characterized by olive and lemon trees, stunning mountains, and bright blue waters.
To the south of Garda are coastal towns such as Bardolino, Desenzano and Sirmione.
Bardolino
Bardolino is surrounded by vineyards, so local wines are found in abundance. Like many settlements on Lake Garda, archaeological finds show that Bardolino has been inhabited since prehistoric times. The 12th-century Bardolino is a romantic place to wander around. Aqualux Hotel Spa Suite & Terme is the best option for accommodation.
Desenzano
Desenzano is a favourite holiday destination for Verona’s jet-set. Nowadays, the town has a beautiful harbour, three large beaches and a lively nightlife, with music bars and casual outdoor cafes. The Hotel Villarosa is a great option for accommodation here, with elegant rooms and stunning lake views, perfect for taking in the scenery with a cocktail in hand.
Sirmione
Sirmione is located right at the top of the spit, offering almost 360° views of the lake. Visitors can indulge in a choice of romantic hotels in Sirmione, such as the Palace Hotel Villa Cortine and Olivi Thermae & Natural Spa, just a few steps from the old town and the 13th-century castle.
Lake Como
Just 80 kilometers north of Milan is the romantic Lake Como. The destination is popular with the rich and famous. For example, stars such as Richard Branson, George Clooney and Madonna have all had holiday homes around the lake. Pretty little villages are scattered around the lake, which stretches for about 32 kilometers, offering an upmarket yet traditional taste of Italian lakeside living. Completing the idyllic picture, the lake has a stunning backdrop of pine-covered mountains. Como splits into two branches in the southern half, and it is in the western branch that some of the most romantic and charming villages are found.
bellagio
Bellagio’s fascinating history is illustrated by centuries-old churches, cobbled streets, and grand villas. Surrounded by green mountains, the region has also become popular with cycling enthusiasts. One of the best places to stay in Bellagio is the luxurious Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni, located in one of Bellagio’s original villas dating back to 1873.
Tremezzina
Across the lake from Bellagio is Tremezzina, a small village perfect for a quiet break and soaking up some of Lake Como's most magnificent views. The Grand Hotel Tremezzo is a superb option.
Cernobbio
At the southwesternmost tip of Lake Como are the towns of Cernobbio and Como. Cernobbio is home to some of the largest villas on Lake Como, while everyday life is a peaceful affair, with casual strolls and natural views. Villa d'Este is an exclusive choice for accommodation.
Lake Maggiore
Not far from Lake Como is the slightly larger Lake Maggiore. Despite its larger size, it is less popular than Lake Como, enjoying a slower pace of life and a gentle atmosphere. However, the villages have a great selection of low-key restaurants and cafes offering delicious local cuisine. For the more active, there are walking, cycling and boating options to suit all tastes. Lake Maggiore was once a popular holiday destination for members of the European nobility for centuries.
