The city of Bakhchisarai entered the history of Russia as a symbol of beauty, sung in the famous poem by A.S. Pushkin "The Fountain of Bakhchisarai". Today it is one of the resort cities of Crimea, which attracts tourists both as a place of a romantic love story, sung by the poet, and as a place of rest and interesting leisure.
Bakhchisaray: history and legends
The city's resonant name derives from the Crimean Tatar language and means "garden-palace." This is unsurprising, as Bakhchisaray was once the capital of the formidable Crimean Khanate, which dated back to the 15th century. But in the 18th century, when the Russians conquered the Crimean Peninsula after a long and bitter struggle, Bakhchisaray gradually became a provincial, yet very charming, town within the Russian Empire.
Bakhchisarai's main landmark is the famous Khan's Palace, home to such structures as the Khan's Chambers, the Khan's Cemetery, and the famous Fountain of Tears (the Bakhchisarai Fountain). The museum complex also houses the Crimean Tatar History Museum and an art gallery.
