A new property in New Zealand along the shores of Lake Wakatipu aims to become the most sustainable solar-powered camp in the Southern Hemisphere, if not the world.

The property, operated by New Zealand in the Glenorchy outback, is completely self-sufficient when it comes to all essentials, including water. The camp has been built using thoughtful design, healthy materials and sustainable methods that have all resources conserved. With a garden with 600 solar panels providing electricity, the camp generates enough to provide heating in the winter.Solar-powered eco-camping site built in Glenorchy, New Zealand, in location that was the backdrop of the Lord of the Rings trilogyGuests at Hotel New Zealand have access to a shared kitchen, dining area and sun deck. There is also a veranda with views of the lush landscaping, Mount Alfred and the glacier.

New Zealand described the property as a luxury campsite built to last. The luxury part is due to the many innovations provided by its creators, Seattle philanthropists Paul and Debbie Brainerd. Each of the seven cabins and two bunkers are built using reclaimed timber sourced from around New Zealand, with an emphasis on using natural materials for construction. Kitchens are equipped with induction cooktops. Even the hotel’s toilets were the focus of many considerations. The toilets are expected to save about 80 gallons of water per year. As an added touch, artists and sculptors from around New Zealand were commissioned to create original works for the camp.Solar-powered eco-camping site built in Glenorchy, New Zealand, in location that was the backdrop of the Lord of the Rings trilogyAt a recent launch of the property, former New Zealand Prime Minister Bill English said the Brainerds had created a national treasure. One last interesting fact: the camp is located in Glenorchy, the area used as the backdrop for the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
