According to the regional tourism development department, the Tibet Autonomous Region in southwest China has launched a series of support measures for winter tourism. These measures include free admission to the Potala Palace and other national attractions of 3A and above in the region, a minimum 50% average off-season discount for airlines and for three-star hotels and above in the region compared to peak season.
The policies will be valid for five months, ending March 15, 2020, the department announced. The department stated that the winter tourism support policy, launched in 2018, has contributed to the rapid development of travel in Tibet. In the first half of 2019, Tibet received more than 11,15 million tourists from home and abroad, generating a total revenue of approximately 12,47 billion yuan (approximately US$1,76 billion).
Tibet is more than the Tibet Autonomous Region (TRA) with its capital in Lhasa, although that is what the average European understands by Tibet. In fact, Tibet is the territory of the Tibetan Plateau, which consists of three historical regions: Ü-Tsang, Amdo, and Kham. These regions encompass both the TRA area and the Tibet Autonomous Prefecture (located in the Chinese provinces of Qinghai, Gansu, Sichuan, and Yunnan). This identity is based not only on geography but primarily on culture.
