One of Europe's most picturesque and romantic routes—the "Path of Love" hiking trail in Italy's Cinque Terre—has reopened to hikers after a 12-year renovation. However, the return of the legendary trail was accompanied not only by the delight of hikers but also by strict new safety measures.
Local authorities reminded that open and smooth footwear, including flip-flops and slippers, is prohibited throughout the park. This ban was introduced back in 2019, but enforcement has now been strengthened. Violating this rule can cost tourists a hefty fine—up to €2500. Special patrols will regularly inspect the walking routes to ensure compliance.
This measure is aimed at reducing injuries: many sections of the trail are steep and slippery, and inappropriate footwear can lead to accidents. Therefore, hikers are strongly advised to wear sturdy hiking shoes with good traction.
This season, some Cinque Terre trails will also be one-way. Specifically, the route between Monterosso and Vernazza will be one-way from 9:00 AM to 14:00 PM on peak days: April 19-21 and 25-27, as well as May 1, 29, and 31, and June 1-2. These measures will help preserve the safety of tourists and the natural heritage of one of Italy's most beautiful regions.
