An unknown man opened fire on passers-by on the tourist pedestrian street Istiklal in Istanbul early Monday morning, July 20. As a result of the shooting, four Turks were injured, as well as a foreign tourist, who was shot in the leg.
According to the Turkish publication Daily Sabah, eyewitnesses of the incident say the attacker got into a conflict with a group of unidentified people. When the argument escalated, the man pulled out a weapon and opened fire indiscriminately.
The shooter fled the scene. The wounded were urgently hospitalized in ambulances. According to preliminary information, none of them received life-threatening injuries. Police are trying find the shooter on the heels of the incident, so far without success.
It should be noted that Istanbul's pedestrian Istiklal street is a recognized center of tourist attraction of the Turkish metropolis. According to the Istanbul city administration, on some days the street is visited by up to 3 million people per day, a considerable part of whom are foreign tourists.
