Maldives Introduces 'Environmental Tax' for Tourists

The Republic of Maldives, located on almost 1200 islands in the Indian Ocean, introduced a new “ecological” tax for tourists on November 1 of this year.

It is reported that from now on, every tourist on holiday will be charged in the Maldives, will be charged $6 per person for each day of stay in the country. The authorities of the republic motivated the introduction of the new tax by concern for the environment. Officials stated that all financial resources received in this way will be directed to the protection of unique flora and fauna archipelago.

It should be noted that initially it was planned to set the tax at $10 per person per day, but the authorities lowered the “bar” after tourists were dissatisfied and tour operators predicted a loss of vacationers.
