Mallorca's famous Caló des Moro bay, popularized by social media, is at risk of becoming completely inaccessible to tourists. This once-quiet corner of nature has become overcrowded: during the summer months, thousands of people flock to this small beach, about 20 meters wide, every day, eager to take spectacular photos.
The recent surge in popularity of this bay has led to serious environmental problems. Vacationers destroy coastal vegetation, leave trash, and sometimes even light fires, which have caused several fires. The owners of the area, Maren and Hans-Peter Oehm, say they can no longer cope with the consequences of overtourism and are forced to spend significant funds on cleanup and restoration.
The couple appealed to local authorities to restrict access to the beach and install fencing. Officials are considering various options for regulating visits to preserve the natural area. The situation is yet another example of how viral popularity on social media can transform little-known natural locations into overcrowded tourist hotspots.
