Koltsovo Airport is the only international airport in Yekaterinburg. Not far from it is Uktus Airport, which specializes in local transportation. Koltsovo Airport got its name from the Yekaterinburg microdistrict of the same name, on the territory of which its runways and a couple of terminals are located.
Koltsovo Airport ranks fifth in the country in terms of passenger traffic. The complex's passport states that it is civilian, but its territory houses bases and transport facilities of the Russian Ministry of Defense.
Like most domestic enterprises of this type, the airport was built at the dawn of industrialization – in 1930, to meet the needs of the country's Air Force. From here in 1942, the BI-1, the first rocket plane, took to the skies. Surprisingly, despite the wartime, in 1943 the complex was transformed into the civilian airport "Sverdlovsk".
In 1950, the complex acquired an airport terminal building and a 100-bed hotel. In 1963, another hotel complex, Liner, was built, oriented exclusively toward airport passengers. In 1968, a new passenger terminal was built.
A landmark event for Koltsovo Airport was the receipt of international status. This happened in 1993, as well as the organization of the Ural Airlines enterprise on its base. The airport's specialty is transatlantic Flights, as well as organized charters to Punta Cana, which are not available at other airports in the country except Pulkovo and the Moscow air hub.
