Turkey's state meteorological service has warned that heavy rain, snow and storms will hit Turkey across the country starting December 3.
“In the coming days, the southern and western coasts are expected to be hit by heavy rains, while heavy snowfall is forecast in the northern, central and eastern regions,” said Volkan Mutlu Coşkun, director general of Turkey’s National Meteorological Service.
For the capital Ankara, the meteorological service predicts rain, snowfall and strong winds starting from the evening of December 3. "Our citizens and authorities must be careful," Coskun said.
In the northern and central regions Istanbul Snowfall of 5 to 15 centimeters (3 to 4 inches) is expected until early next week, with storms expected to hit the city on the evening of December 5. The western province of Izmir will see heavy rain on December 210 and XNUMX. Snowfalls and storms will hit mountain peaks in the central regions. Eastern Turkey is already struggling with cold weather. The Kars River in the eastern province of the same name, which supplies water to a hydroelectric power station, has frozen over. Authorities say XNUMX residential areas in the other eastern provinces of Van, Bitlis and Hakkari are inaccessible due to snowstorms.
Coşkun called on citizens and officials to follow the latest developments on the State Meteorological Service website to take precautions in advance.
