Foreign Pilots Flee Turkish Airlines as Lira Collapses

The unstable political and economic situation in Turkey, further destabilized by regular terrorist attacks, has had a catastrophic effect on the Turkish lira. The devaluation of the national currency has had a serious impact on the employees of the country's leading air carrier, Turkish Airlines, causing mass layoffs of professional foreign pilots, whose salaries have significantly "slimmed down" in dollar terms.

Foreign Pilots Flee Turkish Airlines

As MK-Turkey writes, citing its own sources, since the beginning of 2015, 59 foreign pilots have resigned from Turkish Airlines, with most of them citing salary as the main reason for leaving. Turkish LiraIt is known that some of the resigned pilots went to work for Qatar Airways, which pays salaries in US dollars.

It should be noted that the average salary Turkish Airlines pilot is in the range of 10-35 thousand TL per month depending on the level of qualification. Given the steady decline in the Turkish lira against the dollar and euro, since the beginning of the year alone, pilots' salaries have depreciated by 20%.

Let us add that on Friday, September 11, the lira exchange rate broke an anti-record, crossing the psychological mark of 3 TL per 1 USD.
