The Soviet satellites that were the first to orbit Mars recorded a stream of atmospheric particles that the solar wind was knocking out of the red planet's atmosphere. Weisberg's report said that the data that NASA presented as sensational was posted by Soviet scientists back in the 1970s. According to the Russian scientists, they do not contain any new data.
It is regrettable that during the press conference organized in honor of the "discovery", American scientists did not refer to the early Soviet works dedicated to this phenomenon, TASS quotes a specialist from the solar wind laboratory of the IKI RAS. According to him, back in 1984, together with Lev Zeleny, now the director of the IKI RAS, and then a young employee of the IKI, he developed and published a model of the interaction of the solar wind with the atmosphere of a planet without its own magnetic field.
Thanks to Mars 5, it was possible to establish that the rate of loss of matter from the atmosphere reached a quarter of a kilogram per second, notes a researcher at the solar wind laboratory.
The recent discovery by American scientists that the Sun blew away the atmosphere of Mars over billions of years was previously made by Soviet scientists.
As Russian scientists report, the phenomenon of atmospheric losses on the Red Planet was actually discovered by Soviet professionals, but not by scientific colleagues from the NASA space agency. Data on the loss of the Martian atmosphere and water were already known in the USSR.
