There were 217 passengers and seven crew members on board. The Egyptian side claims that the plane may have crashed due to technical problems.

The heads of the CIS countries, other former Soviet Union countries, and a number of Western leaders, including Finnish President Sauli Niinistö, also sent messages of regret. Aleksandr Khudilainen expressed his regrets to the relatives of all those killed in the plane crash.

"We don't yet know the details of the disaster, but the initial information suggests that this is a major tragedy for everyone," the secretary of state added.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi promised to provide conditions for the broadest possible participation of the Russian Federation in studying the circumstances of the Airbus-321 crash, the Kremlin's PR service reports. The Russian Embassy in Egypt will learn all the circumstances of the incident.

The wreckage of a Russian civilian plane was found on Egypt's Sinai Peninsula on Saturday. The airliner was en route from Sharm el-Sheikh to St. Petersburg.
