"NATO will invite Montenegro to join the Alliance on December 1," the newspaper quotes a NATO source as saying.

This will be the alliance's first expansion in six years, Liga.net reports, citing Die Welt. According to Die Welt, Moscow sent letters to several NATO member states, warning that the Balkan country's accession would lead to a deterioration in Russia's relations with the Alliance.

At the same time, NATO officials also assert that Montenegro's accession does not mean the imminent accession of other countries. "Montenegro's decision to join NATO is a matter for Montenegro and NATO alone," AP quoted Stoltenberg as saying. Meanwhile, a rally was held in Podgorica, Montenegro, calling for the resignation of Milo Đukanović's cabinet, the formation of a transitional leadership, and against the country's forced integration into NATO.

"The admission of Montenegro does not automatically mean subsequent NATO enlargement."

Montenegro is expected to be invited to NATO on December 1.
